Violet Oil Beetle

Was walking our great dog and encountered this interesting thing walking across the street. It was pretty substantial in size, a bit intimidating, but was sporting a dazzling rich blue color.

It turns out it is a Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus). They are full of a defensive fluid that will burn and leave blisters on it’s assaulter, allowing it time to escape. Don’t mess with these things, as they will cause you pretty significant pain and discomfort. My thought is this…..never, ever go barefoot up here in the Northwoods – there are lots of things creeping around that will cause you big problems.
